Who of you knows what motivation means?
Most of you know what motivation means and, probably, you have been motivated in your life, right?
“Houston, we have a problem…”
Why would I say that we have a problem?
You see, when I started my path – Motivation Strategies – that the Toastmasters Pathways system recommended to me after doing my assessment, I was like:
“I don’t believe in motivation, so why would I do a path that talks about motivation when I don’t believe at all?”
And you might say,
“Why don’t you believe motivation?”
Because from my experience, I’ve been in all these “rah-rah” events that make you scream and dance, and the people are screaming on the stage, and they scream all these things that make you start dancing and singing.
However, I thought to myself that this is not working for me. It’s kind of ridiculous (in my opinion always).
Motivation or “Selling”
I don’t believe in motivation — I believe in doing things because we need to do them, that we are self-motivated — that means that if we have some need or want, or some desire, or some value that we want to go after, we are going to pull ourselves up, we are going to find the way, and then we are going to do it.
This is how my mind works.
I’m an Engineer by default, so I want to understand the full mechanics of how everything works, what is the end step, how you can go there, proofs of people that they have done something, and then I can start working towards my goal.
I don’t need someone to come by and pick me by the hand, and say:
“Okay, you have to go to the gym and lose weight.”
I don’t need that. I know the benefits of going to the gym.
However, some people need others to keep them accountable; to go to the gym, to improve their relationships, to develop their wealth, and so on.
Therefore, in my opinion, when we’re talking about motivation, the way I define it, is “selling.”
What I mean is:
When you go to a particular event and you’re listening to someone who talks about ways on how you can create wealth or ways on how you can be a better husband/wife, or methods on how you can make money online, what they do in reality is that they project a better picture, an improvement in a later stage in your life that you are feeling that you can resonate with.
Then, by yourself, you start taking action to go there.
This is what is happening, right?
I think most of us would agree to that.
Therefore, someone, in reality, is “transferring” their emotions or energy to you and you are accepting them and you are ready to listen.
After that, you start doing the next step – to work towards your goal.
This is how I define motivation.
But for the sake of the speech, I have to talk about motivation…
If you watched the last speech that I did about TeamBuilding, you would remember that my speech was pretty much boring. I was very low on energy and that’s because I wasn’t excited about that speech, and the audience could feel it.
Then I asked some people, what did they think about my speech and they told me it was good…but I knew that they didn’t want to hurt my feeling because my speech was crap.
So…I was like, I knew by myself that the speech was crap, not like today that I can stretch the speech and talk about whatever I want which is interesting.
Asking Can Take You Long Ways…
To make a long story short, I want to give you some examples from my life of “how I use this energy or this emotion” to, somehow, move people to take the next step.
About four years ago, I was living in Phuket.
At that time, I was very low on money, I was barely paying my condominium rent and my bills.
When I came to Thailand I had no money, the situation was me struggling to break even month-in month-out.
However, I had an excellent idea — I developed this particular project.
Then, I found out all the questions and answers about that, so I started pitching the idea about that business.
I started going to the business bank branches in Phuket, and I’ve visited “the blue,” “the gold,” “the yellow,” “the red,” “the pink” all the banks, about six (6) or seven (7) of them, and I was talking directly with the directors.
What happened was that all the bank directors were “super excited.” They agreed that that project would make me money. It was very interesting for them, and they liked it.
Despite all of that, because I’m a foreigner, I couldn’t get any kind of funding from them (it was reasonable).
However, because of my “Engineer mind,” every person to whom I talked to gave me extra details along the path about how the banking system works and how I could get funding.
Then, at the six (6) or seven (7) appointments that I did, the puzzle was complete in my mind.
After that, the very next day, I had the money; after 24 hours, I had 1.5 million Thai Baht closed. With no money at all from my side.
Creating Money Out Of Infecting Motivation
How did that happen?
I had the full picture in my mind, I knew what I had to do, I knew the goal.
So what I did was, I went back to my condominium. Then, instantly, I brought in my mind the people who had this kind of money and how they can use them for their benefit and, also, for my benefit.
I had some people whom I knew — I knew that they had this money in the bank, and I approached them like:
“Okay, you’re making 1 to 2% per year in the bank that you are saving your money, but how about if you could make 20% per year?”
They saw the project, they saw the business plan, and we went through the details, and it was a done deal!
What happened was because I was super excited — I knew the goal, I knew how to get to the goal, it was only a matter of talking to different people — my energy motivated them to do something;
I kind of “sold” them to move to the next step.
This is what I call motivation, in my opinion.
Going Big With My Infectious Motivation
A second example, one year after I started my business, I applied for the National Innovation Agency of Thailand funding as a business. At that time 2016, I think I was the only foreigner;
I mean at least for those 5 rounds, I didn’t see a foreigner there. Still, I passed the 5 rounds, and I reached the finals. I presented at the Startup Thailand Event at Phuket in 2016.
Now, imagine me, who had no idea about public speaking. That was the first time in my life doing public speaking in an audience in a room where I was given the chance to speak in front of the Prime Minister and all the high-ranking people of Thailand — Ministers and all these people.
There was also no foreigner in that room, and I had to present in English, and I had no experience with public speaking. So, I was on the stage, shaking and not knowing what to say, and I was dreaming all day about what to say.
Then, at the end of the speech, I ran off the stage just to hide; I didn’t want anybody to see me. However, what I realized was that the people were clapping and were very, very excited about the idea that I’ve presented.
Since I was very passionate about that goal and business, my energy motivated them and sold them the idea, the bigger picture of what I wanted to do.
At that time, the Director of the National Innovation Agency came to me and shook my hand. Then, they awarded me as the second most important project in Thailand for 2016.
Still, I don’t know if there were any other foreigners over there at that time. This is another example of how you can motivate people by using or passing your energy and your emotions to them.
Filling Up The Puzzle Pieces Motivates You
Now you see me speaking very excited, very motivated, and engaged. The reason is that, as I told you I have an Engineer mind, so I am always trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle — to complete my goals and achievements, and what I want to do in the big picture.
Thus, every time I try to think of details. Actually, there are some times in your life that you’re finding the missing piece of a puzzle; this is what has happened to me a couple of weeks ago.
I started watching some entrepreneurs online and how they presented the things that I was interested in. It created an “Aha!” moment for me, and I said,
“Okay, that was the missing piece! Now I can see the full mechanics, how it works. If I know how it works, I can do it. If they do it, I can also do it.”
That’s why I am super excited in the past week. I am waking up at 6 AM alone every day just to start my business and keep growing.
For the sake of the speech, I have to mention some accomplishments with Toastmasters.
In 2018, I did 3 or 4 “Pathways” training to other Toastmasters clubs.
I hadn’t done that before; I was invited to deliver “Pathways” training by other Toastmaster clubs. I also did a presentation on “Train Your Trainer” with the pathways again.
Then outside of Toastmasters, I was invited to speak to three public engagements in the marketing industry. As an expert in Marketing, it brought me a lot of awareness and attraction as well as new clients.
Then, what happened is that I’ve met a lot of new and interesting friends.
Another thing is that I’ve started meeting and booking clients that I couldn’t dream of three years ago. These people are ‘extraordinary.’ I’ve been talking with them, and they were like, “Wow! I am learning from you (pertaining to yours truly)”, and that makes me more excited.
Going Big On Motivation With $1 Mil Goal
Last things are my next steps and future goals.
I am developing my business, which is a Marketing and Business Consulting Agency. Last week, I went to my partner, and I told him that the next (2) two years we need to 10x our growth.
So he asked what did I mean with that? And my answer was:
“I want to make 1 mil USD! I don’t care how I want to do that!”
Even though he said that I am crazy when hearing my plan, the reality is I am not crazy because I knew what I meant and what I need to do. We just need to keep growing! There is no secret.
My second step for me to make my plan possible, I’ll also need to help as many people as possible. I need to contribute, I need to give my energy and deliver value.
While I’m doing it for the next couple of months, I’ll start to build my personal brand, go public, and start publishing content and giving value to the people through my experiences and my knowledge.
Because there are many people, who are asking me details that I didn’t know before and I find myself to be kind of their “mentor”. Even better, in the last 3 or 4 years, I’m in the position of getting paid to be their mentor.
So I thought why not do this publicly so that I can reach people who will also bring me back goodwill and good energy.
To do that, you need to feel pumped up alone. You need to go out there, grab your life by the hair, and start running.
I hope that gave you a lot of energy and put you on motivation steroids.
